A letter to Los Angeles Sol fans from Commissioner Antonucci

Dear Los Angeles Sol Fans,

I know for all Los Angeles Sol fans out there that this past week and Thursday's dispersal draft of the LA Sol players has been very difficult news to take. Let me tell you, it was equally as tough for us in the league office.

The decision to shut down the operations of the Los Angeles Sol was not an easy decision to make but it was a necessary decision as we began final preparations for the 2010 WPS Season without the proper ownership group in… Continue

Transcendent moments to build on

Greetings from the league office as we wrap an historic 2009 season and look forward to 2010!

The last few weeks, including an incredible Cinderella story and an amazing display of all-star talent, really put a bow on a successful inaugural season that met its goal of matching up the world’s best, week after week. Our fans, sponsors, and national and regional television partners truly helped set a solid foundation for years to come, even in the most challenging financial climate many of us have… Continue

Talent on display as post-season is underway

Greetings from the commissioner’s office as our inaugural postseason has just gotten underway!

It’s been a whirlwind few months of great play and lively crowds, which culminated with a tremendous finish to our regular season: the Washington, New York/New Jersey, and Boston franchises all battling for the last two playoff spots. Congratulations to the Freedom and Sky Blue FC for claiming those berths and for putting on an exciting match in this past Saturday’s First Round. In hot conditions, Sky… Continue

Putting on a great show

Greetings from league headquarters in sunny San Francisco!

We’re one month into our first season, and what a month it’s been. From an opening-day crowd of nearly 15,000 in L.A. to Sunday’s instant-classic barn-burner between the Washington Freedom and FC Gold Pride, we’ve made an early habit of meeting expectations for world-class action on the pitch.

The Freedom’s 4-3 victory over the Gold Pride, beyond the deluge of goals and dramatic comebacks, was a great example of the extraordinary produ… Continue

Counting down the days to the Inaugural Match

Greetings from the league office as a very, very big day approaches!

Sunday’s Inaugural Match between the Los Angeles Sol and the Washington Freedom represents so many things: An historic moment in women’s professional sports. A reason for little girls to dream big. A chance for millions of people of every age, men and women, to watch world-class athletes in their own backyards. And the first chance for WP… Continue

The Sky Blue-Freedom playoff was a great match to see in person, sorry you missed it. And unfortunately for NJ viewers, Fox Sports Net (MSG+) didn't broadcast the match live, so that they could air Mixed Martial Arts. Hopefully we can find a better network for WPS next year!

As you may know Sky Blue FC's last home game is Wednesday night August 5th at Yurcak field. The game starts at 7:00PM. This should be an exciting match due to the tight playoff race Sky Blue FC is in as well as the great giveaways that fans will receive at the game. Their will even be a jersey auction where you can bid on game used jerseys!

Hey there Commish-

Even though Dallas isn't fielding a team this year (any new news on the stadium situation?), I'm still following the league. I'm making plans to drive up to St. Louis for their first game vs Chicago.

An interesting question has come up over on the BigSoccer boards in regards to players rights. For those players that were drafted in the International and WNT Player Pool drafts that aren't going to play in the WPS this season, what happens if they come over to play on a future season? For instance, Renata Costa signed with a team in Europe so St Louis wasn't able to sign her. If she were to join the league next season or some season after that, would St Louis retain first dibs? Or would she be put up in the general draft for anyone to pick.
