How did your dad influence your pursuance of soccer?
My dad has always been really supportive of what I’ve done. He didn’t care what sport I was playing as long as I was enjoying myself and that is something he always stressed, having fun. He was very supportive but never pressured me. He was also very athletic—he played water polo, he didn’t know much about soccer but he liked that I was into it.
How has your dad helped shape the person you are today both on and off the field?
Off the field my dad is an awesome role model. He works so hard (he’s a heart surgeon) I see him go to work every day and give so much to his patients and to our family. The level of commitment he has shown to the people around him has helped shape me. It has taught me perseverance and commitment. Also, watching my dad has made me want to be a doctor myself. On the field I’ve heard that my dad was a pretty tough defender in water polo so I think I may have inherited his aggressive tendencies. He has helped me be fearless on the field and be a strong, tough player.
How has your dad motivated you to become an elite player?
I don’t know that he ever really pressured me or cared what level I’ve got to as long as I was happy. But more my example watching him the way he approaches his life has helped me take a similar approach to soccer dedicated to and working on the things I need to work on, and being passionate about it. I’ve learned form being an example from him. He has always been supportive in being a dad and his career.
What is one quality you admire about your dad?
There are a lot of qualities. I would have to say his determination and commitment and selflessness in his job, his work ethic and what he gives to our family. He is really funny and has a great sense of humor. I can go to him for advice and helps lighten any situation I go through so that’s always comforting.

How did your dad influence your pursuance of soccer?
He got me into it because my sister played it. Lets just say every opportunity to play any sport was given to me by my father. He drove me to every single practice and all my games. He even drove to from Wisconsin to Illinois for practice occasionally. From my days of playing club soccer and to this day he travels, even internationally, to watch me play. From day one he was always there to support me. He never pressured me, but always supported me.
How has your dad helped shape the person you are today both on and off the field?
My dad was a businessman when I was growing up, I’ve learned a lot through his experiences. Success in his eyes was not just about success the work you did. I learned that working hard and my attitude meant more than how good I was especially at sports. He encouraged me to work hard at everything I did and taught me taht the only way I would be successful would be to work hard and have a good attitude. Being a soccer player is what I do and I’m proud of that, but I’m more proud of what kind of person I am and the person I’m trying to be because I’m able to model myself after my dad who has set a great example.
How has your dad motivated you to become an elite player?
I was motivated to be better because he was there. After all he has provided for me, I want to make him proud. I still think it’s so cool to be able to give my parents something. Having my dad’s support motivated me to take advantage of the opportunities he was affording me and make the most out of it.
What is one quality you admire about your dad?
Its hard to say just one quality I admire about my dad. He’s just such an awesome person and a great dad. He has always supported me and my sister. He is like my best friend. If I had to name one thing I would say I admire I would say it is how unconditionally he loves and supports me no matter what.

How did your dad influence your pursuance of soccer?
My dad was a professional soccer player in Cuba I was at his games since I was a baby. It was a part of m life from the time I was born. I didn’t stat laying organized soccer until I came to the US at 6 y.o. All the success I’ve had as a soccer player a lot of it has to do with the fact that my dad played with me literally everyday in the back yard until I was 13 when I first beat him… after that he never played with me again. I was an only child and he was like a big brother to me. It was a small back yard and it definitely helped me with the technical part of the game. He instilled in me the love, passion and desire to be the best in soccer. He never took it easy on me, that’s for sure!
How has your dad helped shape the person you are today both on and off the field?
He has helped me become a better person in every single way. He is the most amazing father to me and husband to my mom. I would be happy if I can be half the father he ewas to me to my children. At home it’s a little different than what you see in the Spanish culture, my dad always helloed around the house. He helped my mom in every single way possible. He taught me to respect the people you’re around and generally just to love life. He has done everything he’s been able to do to ensure his family is taken care of and coming from Cuba to the US was difficult, not speaking the language. He took jobs to make sure that my mom and I were taken care of. He instilled the value of pride and fully committing yourself to everything you do. Because of him I don’t know of ay other way. When I take on a task, my passion and commitment is what has helped me succeed in everything I’ve done.
How has your dad motivated you to become an elite player?
It started at an early age… it was by kicking my butt on the field everyday in the backyard. He always made it clear to me what was expected of me to become an elite athlete. He never smoked, he doesn’t drink, he takes care of his body and it something I took pride in doing when I was younger because of my size I always had to make sure I was the most fit and technical player out there and that was the case through my time with the youth national team and what contributed to being drafted in the first round in The MLS draft. He also helped me with the mental part of the game. He never let me get away with anything. If I had a bad game he would let me know, it might have been a little tough to take at times but it made me stronger and that’s what you need at the highest level.
What is one quality you admire about your dad?
I cant single one thing out, I admire my father so much. He is an inspiration and I hope that when people look at me they can see a lot of him here because he has done so much to help me become who I am. If I had to pick one thing it would be the pride that he takes in everything he does. He can’t ever be second best.
