Women's Professional Soccer

Monday, June 1

When we walked into the Washington Freedom visitor locker room yesterday we noticed something different about the uniform lineup. For the first time all season my jersey (8) was next to Leslie’s jersey (10).

It was official that we were missing our #9: Kandace Wilson.

Kandace is out for the rest of the season with sublimation (partial separation) of her right hip and fractured the right posterior aspect of the acetabulum (hip socket).

In the game against Los Angeles last weekend, she was shielding the ball out of bounds as a player on the Sol challenged for the ball. As she was being pushed off the ball she tried to regain her balance and in the process her knee locked causing an awkward fall.

At the time it didn’t seem that bad, because the contact wasn’t malicious, but later that day we found out it would be a season-ending injury.

It was disappointing news to say the least. Kandace had been playing so well and doing so much for our team on and off the field. She is an amazing player and a huge part of the Pride’s success this season.

Injuries occur all the time in sports- they are just part of the game. Look at Sarah Huffman; she tore her ACL five days into the WPS preseason… or Leslie and Abby who missed the Olympics because of season ending injuries.

The USA still won the gold.
Teams learn to find a way.

Even though Kdubz will be sorely missed, it’s just one more obstacle the Pride must overcome. And we will… and she will still be apart of it…every step, just in a different form.

We need her to help us keep our swag on... (Check out the video we made for Kandace... she loved it!! "Got Our Swag On")

Any injury changes some of the energy, chemastry that a team has tried to establish.
I wonder if Tina DiMartino, who has that "sneaky" speed could play right mid and with her ball control and ability to cross into the box, it might fill that very important void.

I was very impressed with Kandace in that match - it's a shame she's out for the season. Of course, that's true for all of these injuries.
