Welcome to Wednesday’s with Wilson! I’m Kandace Wilson and I play with the FC Gold Pride WPS team. Sixteen days prior to today, I was injured in a game vs. LA Sol in the 90th minute of play and from the x-rays; it was clearly proven that I have a fractured hip. This has been one of the most severe injuries I have encountered in my soccer career; however, I’ve had to sit out half of a season like this season due to an ankle fracture followed by surgery. It’s just as hard now as it was before but I’ve been through it, therefore, I know how to handle the situation better.
It was a week and two days after my injury when I went back to the Dr.’s office to get a 3D image of my hip fracture…pretty interesting I must say. The one thing I was most excited about was for the Dr. to tell me that I can come off crutches, IF, I had no pain walking. Well, when I was at home with my parents, I started taking little baby steps, walking back and forth to the bathroom, to brush my teeth, and to turn the T.V. on and off. Nothing major, like I said, little baby steps. Well, it didn’t seem to turn out the way I planned. Instead, the Dr. said I had to stay on crutches for another four weeks to make sure my fractured heals correctly. OMG! Another four weeks? But what can I say? Dr. knows best!
So I was hoping I could walk out the Dr.’s office with some positive news other than no surgery, so I asked him if I could start rehabbing. The few things I could do to keep my endurance up are pool workouts, stationary biking, and quad strengthening exercises; which indeed is better than nothing. Therefore, I start my long journey of healing a fractured hip and preparing for next years season, where I will come back much faster, stronger and more determined than before.
